5.5 Inductance of Isolated Structure

It is possible to find the inductance of isolated structures using the method outlined in section 5.4. It is very difficult to apply this method for any arbitrary shape. However, this method can be applied to some regular structure.

The inductance of a wire of length d and radius r is given by



Example 5.1– Find the inductance of an isolated wire, 20 mils in diameter and 2 inches long.

Example 5.2– – The diameter of an isolated wire of length 2 inches in decreased from 20 mils to 10 mils. Find the percentage increase in the inductance.

If we want to decrease the inductance, increasing the radius in not a very effective way to do it. A better way is to reduce its length.
