Absorption loss

The absorption loss of an electromagnetic wave passing through a shielding material of thickness x is given by,

Example - Find the absorption in dB by a 1 mm thick aluminum sheet at 150 KHz and 100 MHz. The conductivity of aluminum is 0.61 relative to copper. Its relative permeability is 1.

Solution –

The Table below shows the electrical properties of the shielding materials ( from MIL-HDBK-419A). The absorption loss of different materials at 1 mm and 1 mil thickness are shown.

Table - Electrical properties of Shielding materials at 150 KHz

This table shows the absorption loss of the three common metals (from MIL-HDBK-419A) Table - Absorption Loss, A, of 1 mm Metal Sheet
