Price Comparison of Allegro, Altium and PADS

April 13th, 2015

In deciding CAD tools, price is one of the most important factors. The best way to know the exact price is to go to the vendors and ask for quotes. However, you may want to have an idea of the ball park price numbers to know before head what the prices are. Based upon my research the approximate prices are as follows

1. Cadence Allegri $25000 ( plus yearly upgrade fee)
2. PADS $15000
3. Altium $5000
4. Eagle $1500

Notice that this is just a ball park number and the exact pricing will depend upon the features and options that you are buying with.

The pricing makes Altium as one of the best EDA tool for PCB design, assuming your requirements are moderate. The disadvantage with Cadence Allegro is not only the price but also the longer learning curve. However, Allegro is used by almost all the big companies ( freescale, TI etc) and in case you are to get a reference design, Cadence Allegro helps. Once the learning curve is over, Allegro has a lot of nice features, especially for modern high speed complex board designs.

OrCad is now the bottom end of the Allegro line (you can even open allegro files in OrCad)and it can be had for less than 5K and maintenance is about the same as Altium.

I don't know what "Allegri" is but $25000 is way too high to pay for Cadence, the list price of a middle grade Allegro seat is less than PADS.

    Greetings to you Sirs!
We are a small company. We want to become great. One of the ways is to go to PCB making.Hence this message. On comparing the prices of different softwares, I prefer to go at present for OrCad but would like to get the current price of the chiefest of the Altium.
