Adblock

February 1st, 2010

Yesterday I had a chance to install Adblock extention in my firefox browser and I must say that I am impressed and I must recommend it to anyone who wants improved browsing experience.

What Adblock Does

Adlock allows users to prevent advertisements  from being  displayed. It also prevents download of some elements. Adblock has become one  of the most popular firefox extension and at the time of writing there were   69,704,401 downloads. According to one source it has 8.5 million daily users.

Adblock Hurts Google ?

Adblock also blocks the Adsense Ads from Google, which is also the bread and butter for the existence of Google. The following two figure shows how a webpage looks like with and without the Adblock

Figure 1 – Ads do not display with Adblock installed

Figure 2 – Ads displaying without the installation of Adblock

Google is certainly not happy with the Adblock. It is a pain in the ass of google and it is not sitting idle to do something against the Adblock. Google Chrome is supposed to do give some more control to google to prevent the display of the Ads.

Just consider what will happen if Adblock is installed by default in mozilla firefox ? Can you just imagine how much revenue will drop for Google ? It will be a mind bogling number that Google will not like.

Whether we want it or not is a debatable question. Many website owners depend upon the Adsense for their existence. However, the improved navigation experience after the installation of Adblock dictates that more and more people will continue to enhance their browsing experience by installing Adblock Plus.

Google as well as Yahoo continue to decline to comment on Adblock – everywhere I read on the internet.  And the reason seems to be obvious. Many big players have been requesting its user not to use Adblock as this is the source of their revenue – It has been reported by Washington post.

So did you try downloading Adblock today ?
